Troubleshooting
iPhone Apps Keep Crashing?
Apps closing unexpectedly? Freezing and becoming unresponsive? Here's how to fix app crashes and keep your apps running smoothly.
Why Apps Crash
- Outdated app: App needs update for new iOS
- Low storage: Not enough space for app data
- Outdated iOS: System bugs fixed in updates
- Corrupted app: App files are damaged
- Memory issues: Too many apps running
Fixes to Try
1 Force Close and Reopen the App
- Swipe up from bottom and pause (or double-click Home button)
- Find the crashing app
- Swipe up on it to close
- Open the app again
2 Update the App
Developers fix bugs in app updates:
- Open App Store
- Tap your profile icon at top right
- Scroll down to see pending updates
- Tap Update next to the crashing app (or Update All)
3 Restart Your iPhone
Clears memory and stops stuck processes:
- Hold Side + Volume Down
- Slide to power off
- Wait 30 seconds
- Turn back on
4 Free Up Storage
Low storage causes crashes:
- Go to Settings → General → iPhone Storage
- Target at least 2-5GB free space
- Delete unused apps, photos, or clear cache
See our full guide: Free Up iPhone Storage
5 Update iOS
iOS updates fix system bugs that cause app crashes:
- Go to Settings → General → Software Update
- Install any available updates
6 Delete and Reinstall the App
Fresh install fixes corrupted app files:
- Long-press the app icon
- Tap Remove App → Delete App
- Go to App Store and reinstall it
- Sign back in if needed
⚠️ Note: This may delete app data. Check if the app syncs to cloud first.
7 Check App Compatibility
Old apps may not work on new iOS:
- Check app's App Store page for iOS requirements
- If app hasn't been updated in years, it may be abandoned
- Look for alternative apps that are actively maintained
8 Reset All Settings
If multiple apps crash (doesn't erase data):
- Go to Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone
- Tap Reset → Reset All Settings
If All Apps Are Crashing
When every app crashes, the problem is usually iOS itself:
- Make sure iOS is fully updated
- Try a full restart (not just sleep/wake)
- As last resort: backup and restore via computer
Prevent Future Crashes
- Keep apps updated (enable automatic updates)
- Keep iOS updated
- Maintain at least 2-5GB free storage
- Restart iPhone weekly
- Delete apps you don't use
Apps Still Crashing?
If apps continue to crash after trying all fixes, there may be a deeper software issue.
