Troubleshooting
iPhone Camera Not Working?
Camera showing a black screen, taking blurry photos, or the app won't even open? Before assuming hardware failure, try these software fixes - they work more often than you'd think.
Common Camera Symptoms
- Black screen: Usually software - try fixes below
- Blurry photos: Could be dirty lens, focus issue, or OIS problem
- Camera app crashes: Usually software or storage issue
- Flashlight doesn't work: Often related to camera issues
- "Cannot Take Photo": Usually storage full
Fixes to Try
1 Clean the Camera Lens
Smudges, fingerprints, and dust cause blurry photos.
- Use a clean, dry microfiber cloth
- Gently wipe the camera lens in circular motion
- Check for scratches on the lens cover
- Remove any case that might be covering the lens
⚠️ Don't: Use paper towels (scratch lens), spray liquids directly on camera, or use abrasive cloths.
2 Close and Reopen Camera App
Force-close the Camera app:
- Swipe up from bottom and pause (or double-click Home button)
- Find the Camera app in the app switcher
- Swipe it up to close
- Wait 5 seconds, then reopen Camera
3 Force Restart Your iPhone
Clears camera software glitches:
iPhone 8 and later:
Volume Up → Volume Down → Hold Side Button until Apple logo
After restart, test both front and rear cameras.
4 Free Up Storage
"Cannot Take Photo" means storage is full.
- Go to Settings → General → iPhone Storage
- Target at least 1GB free space for photos
- Delete old photos, videos, or apps you don't use
- Enable iCloud Photos to offload storage
5 Switch Between Cameras
Sometimes switching cameras resets the system:
- Open Camera app
- Tap the camera flip icon to switch to front camera
- Wait a few seconds
- Switch back to rear camera
- If one works and the other doesn't, you have a hardware issue
6 Check Camera Permissions
If camera doesn't work in specific apps:
- Go to Settings → Privacy & Security → Camera
- Make sure the app has camera permission enabled
- Try toggling it off and on again
7 Update iOS
Camera bugs are fixed in iOS updates:
- Go to Settings → General → Software Update
- Install any available updates
- Some camera features require newer iOS versions
8 Reset All Settings
If software fixes haven't worked:
- Go to Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone
- Tap Reset → Reset All Settings
- This resets camera settings to default
- Your photos and apps are NOT deleted
Hardware Problems
If none of the above worked, you likely have hardware damage:
Rear Camera Issues
- OIS failure: Image stabilization broken - photos always blurry/shaky
- Scratched lens cover: Visible scratches = always hazy photos
- Camera module failure: Black screen that persists after restart
- Water damage: Foggy lens from moisture inside
Front Camera Issues
- Face ID related: Front camera connects to Face ID module
- Screen replacement damage: Common after non-Apple screen repairs
⚠️ Face ID Warning: On iPhone X and later, the front camera is part of the Face ID system. Replacing just the camera can disable Face ID permanently. This repair should be done by professionals.
