iPhone Ghost Touch?
Is your iPhone screen acting possessed? Random touches, opening apps, typing gibberish? This is called "ghost touch" and here's how to fix it.
What Causes Ghost Touch
- Screen protector issues: Air bubbles, poor quality, or lifting edges
- Dirty screen: Debris interfering with touch sensors
- Software glitch: iOS bugs affecting touch
- Screen damage: Cracked or damaged digitizer
- Water damage: Moisture inside affecting touch
- Faulty display: Defective touch IC or cables
Fixes to Try
1 Clean the Screen
Debris can trigger false touches:
- Power off your iPhone
- Use a clean microfiber cloth
- Wipe the entire screen gently
- Pay attention to edges and corners
- Don't use liquids directly on screen
2 Remove Screen Protector
Screen protectors often cause ghost touch:
- Carefully peel off the screen protector
- Clean any adhesive residue
- Test if ghost touch stops
- If fixed, get a higher quality screen protector
3 Force Restart iPhone
Clears software glitches:
Volume Up → Volume Down → Hold Side Button until Apple logo
4 Adjust Touch Settings
Change touch sensitivity:
- Go to Settings → Accessibility → Touch
- Try adjusting Touch Accommodations
- Enable Hold Duration to require longer press
5 Update iOS
Some ghost touch is caused by software bugs:
- Go to Settings → General → Software Update
- Install any available updates
6 Reset All Settings
If software-related (doesn't erase data):
- Go to Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone
- Tap Reset → Reset All Settings
7 Check for Physical Damage
Inspect your screen for:
- Cracks or chips (even small ones)
- Screen lifting from frame
- Discoloration or dark spots
- Signs of water damage (foggy camera, water indicators)
iPhone X Ghost Touch Program
⚠️ iPhone X Specific: Apple acknowledged a display module issue affecting some iPhone X devices manufactured between late 2017 and 2018.
Symptoms: Screen doesn't respond to touch, or responds without being touched.
Apple will repair eligible devices for free - check at support.apple.com.
When Hardware Repair Is Needed
Ghost touch requires screen replacement if:
- Ghost touch persists after all software fixes
- Screen is visibly damaged
- Started after a drop or water exposure
- Screen was recently replaced with a non-OEM part
