Troubleshooting
iPhone Says "No Service"?
Stuck with "No Service" or "Searching..."? Can't make calls or use cellular data? Most no-service issues are fixable without repair. Try these solutions.
First: Rule Out Carrier Issues
- Is your account active and paid?
- Is there a carrier outage in your area? (Check carrier's website or DownDetector)
- Are you in a known dead zone?
- Do other phones on the same carrier work?
Fixes to Try
1 Toggle Airplane Mode
Forces your iPhone to reconnect to cellular:
- Open Control Center (swipe down from top-right)
- Tap the Airplane icon to turn it ON
- Wait 30 seconds
- Tap again to turn it OFF
- Wait for signal to reconnect
2 Restart Your iPhone
Resets cellular connection:
- Hold Side Button + Volume Down
- Slide to power off
- Wait 30 seconds
- Turn back on
3 Check for Carrier Settings Update
Carriers push updates that affect connectivity:
- Go to Settings → General → About
- If a carrier update is available, you'll see a popup
- Tap Update to install
4 Remove and Reinsert SIM Card
Reseats the SIM connection:
- Use SIM eject tool (or paperclip) to open SIM tray
- Remove the SIM card
- Check SIM for damage or dirt
- Reinsert SIM card properly
- Close tray firmly
⚠️ eSIM users: If you use eSIM only, skip this step.
5 Try SIM Card in Another Phone
Determines if the issue is the SIM or the iPhone:
- If SIM works in another phone: iPhone has the problem
- If SIM doesn't work anywhere: Get a new SIM from your carrier
6 Check Cellular Settings
- Go to Settings → Cellular
- Make sure Cellular Data is ON
- Tap Cellular Data Options
- Try toggling Data Roaming if traveling
- Check Voice & Data is set to LTE or 5G Auto
7 Update iOS
Cellular bugs are fixed in updates:
- Go to Settings → General → Software Update
- Install any available updates
8 Reset Network Settings
Nuclear option for network issues:
- Go to Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone
- Tap Reset → Reset Network Settings
- Enter passcode
- This resets WiFi, Bluetooth, VPN, and cellular settings
9 Check for Account Issues
Contact your carrier to verify:
- Account is active and in good standing
- SIM card is activated and valid
- No blocks or restrictions on your line
- iPhone IMEI isn't blacklisted
10 Try a New SIM Card
SIM cards can fail:
- Visit your carrier's store
- Ask for a new SIM card (usually free)
- They'll transfer your number to the new SIM
When It's Hardware
If none of the above worked, you may have hardware damage:
- Antenna damage: From drops, often affects specific bands
- Baseband IC failure: The cellular modem chip has failed
- SIM reader damage: Can't read any SIM card
- Water damage: Corrosion affecting cellular components
These require professional board-level repair or may not be cost-effective to fix.
