iPhone Overheating?
iPhone getting uncomfortably hot? Showing a temperature warning? Here's why it happens and how to safely cool it down without damaging your device.
Normal vs. Problem Heat
Normal warm: Slightly warm during charging, gaming, video calls, GPS navigation
Problem hot: Uncomfortable to hold, shows temperature warning, throttles performance, or shuts down
iPhones are designed to operate between 32°F and 95°F (0°C to 35°C). Above that, they'll display a warning and may shut down to protect themselves.
What Causes Overheating
- Direct sunlight - especially in cars or on dashboards
- Heavy use - gaming, video recording, AR apps
- Charging while using - especially with fast chargers
- Hot environment - above 95°F ambient temperature
- Thick case - traps heat inside
- Software issue - runaway process using CPU
- Battery problem - failing battery generates excess heat
How to Cool Down Your iPhone
1 Move to a Cooler Area
Get your iPhone out of direct sunlight and heat:
- Move indoors or to shade
- Never leave iPhone in a parked car
- Keep away from heat vents and radiators
2 Remove the Case
Cases trap heat. Take it off to let the phone dissipate heat faster through its aluminum/glass body.
3 Stop Charging
If charging, unplug the cable. Charging generates heat, especially fast charging.
4 Close Heavy Apps
Close games, camera, video apps, and anything using intensive processing:
- Swipe up and pause (or double-click Home)
- Swipe up on app cards to close them
5 Enable Low Power Mode
Reduces performance and background activity:
Settings → Battery → Low Power Mode
6 Turn Off iPhone
If still hot, power off completely:
- Hold Side Button + Volume Down
- Slide to power off
- Let it cool for 15-30 minutes
7 Fan or Air Conditioning
Place iPhone near (not directly in front of) an air conditioner or fan to help it cool faster.
- Put iPhone in freezer or refrigerator (condensation damages internals)
- Blow directly with compressed air
- Submerge in water or ice
8 Check for Software Issues
If overheating happens without heavy use:
- Check Settings → Battery for apps using high %
- Update iOS: Settings → General → Software Update
- Force restart: Volume Up → Volume Down → Hold Side Button
Preventing Overheating
- Don't charge in direct sunlight or hot car
- Use Apple-certified chargers
- Remove thick cases when gaming or charging
- Take breaks during intensive tasks
- Keep iOS and apps updated
- Replace aging batteries (they generate more heat)
When It's a Hardware Problem
Get your iPhone checked if:
- It overheats constantly, even with light use
- Battery is swelling (back glass or screen lifting)
- Overheating started after a drop or water exposure
- You smell burning or see smoke (stop using immediately!)
iPhone Still Overheating?
If your iPhone keeps overheating despite trying everything, it may have a hardware issue like a failing battery.
